[ENG] Spiegl tells a universal story of fleeing, through an organic mix of road movie, opera and re-enacted memories. Yitschak Spiegl was the foster daughter of a Czech mother, and was living as a woman when in 1988 he fled communist Czechoslovakia. Fragments of his personal history emerge as he visits places in Austria with the filmmaker where he spent time as a refugee. Chance meetings with people on the street unintentionally form a recurring thread that links up themes of exclusion and pigeonholing, which shape the painful undertone of Spiegl's life story.
In a studio, Yitschak and the filmmaker zoom in on significant moments in his life: the farewell to his foster mother; a raid on the asylum seekers' centre by armed police; his first love. The filmmaker is concerned more about the process than the result, demonstrating both how memory works, and the trust established between maker and protagonist. The mini-opera, running through the film, elevates Spiegl's experience to a higher plane.

[NL] Spiegl vertelt een vluchtverhaal van alle tijden in een organische mengvorm van roadmovie, opera en nagespeelde herinneringen. Yitschak Spiegl was de pleegdochter van een Tsjechische moeder en ging door het leven als vrouw toen hij in 1988 communistisch Tsjechoslowakije ontvluchtte. Brokstukken van zijn persoonlijke geschiedenis komen boven als hij met de filmmaker plekken in Oostenrijk opzoekt waar hij als vluchteling verbleef. Toevallige ontmoetingen met mensen op straat keren onbedoeld telkens terug naar thema's van uitsluiting en hokjesdenken, die de pijnlijke ondertoon van Spiegls levensverhaal vormen.
In een studio zoomen Yitschak en de filmmaker in op belangrijke momenten uit zijn leven: het afscheid van zijn pleegmoeder, een gewapende politie-inval in de asielopvang, zijn eerste verliefdheid. Het gaat de filmmaker niet om het resultaat maar om het proces, dat zowel de werking van het geheugen als het vertrouwen tussen maker en hoofdpersoon demonstreert. Een mini-opera die als een rode draad door de film loopt, tilt zijn ervaringen naar een hoger plan.
